EASTCONN EXCELS

EASTCONN’s regional EXCELS (Excellence in Community, Employment & Life Skills) classroom continues to provide transition and functional skills support for middle and high school students in grades 6-12+ at our Northeast Regional Program (NRP) building located at 79 Westfield Avenue in Danielson. EXCELS offers staff expertise and quality programming in explicit instruction, data-based decision-making, team collaboration, tiered behavioral supports, and transition supports and services. The goal of EXCELS is to maximize students’ independence as they prepare for the transition to adulthood and life beyond the classroom.Students are supported by a team of educators in the development of academic skills, social skills, independence skills, and employability skills in the context of an authentic high school experience, regardless of the student’s disability. Individual Education Programs are developed through the Planning and Placement Team process with the Local Education Agency (LEA). During these unprecedented times, the Woodstock Academy Collaborative Program collaborates with the Woodstock Academy staff in order to ensure differentiated instruction continues to be provided on our eLearning platform.

Benefits: Students in EXCELS receive targeted, individualized support in educational and daily-living areas with an emphasis on gaining independence and self-determination skills. Students have the opportunity to participate in varied classroom experiences, including unified physical education, unified music, unified food courses, work study experiences and modified regular education classes. Transition planning, community-based instruction and services are an ongoing part of each student's prescribed program. Students may also participate in after-school activities through a unified sports program, alongside student mentors, that includes bowling, basketball, kickball and soccer.
